Small Business Interview: Michelle Moore, Pretty + Profesh
Meet Michelle "Michi" Moore, a Life and Business Stylist and the founder of Pretty + Profesh. Michi has a degree is mass communications and over a decade of sales experience. She's all about empowering women through positive affirmations through her amazing website. In this interview she offers some invaluable advise for small business owners on getting the help they need and on setting boundaries.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your business. What is it called and what services / products do you offer?
Hi there! I'm Michelle Scott Moore, but you can call me Michi! I am a Leading Life and Business Stylist and the founder of Pretty + Profesh. Cute huh? I help lady entrepreneurs run more efficient businesses so they can enjoy the life they want. I also operate Pretty + Profesh whose goal is empowering women to have a more intentional life and business. I'm all about working smarter, and shifting your mindset so you can achieve amazing things.... all while staying fabulous!
As a life and business stylist, I help creative and ambitious ladies build their businesses by focusing on what makes them unique instead of following the crowd. When you have your focus, intention, and processes in place, selling without sleaze and living a life you can truly enjoy is a
piece of cake... well, at least a couple of macarons!
We offer free training and support through the Pretty+Profesh Facebook Group and are in the process of extending the number of guides and self-study kits. We will also launch our first supercharged live program again in 2016. At this point, I have private clients I assist with sales, social media, website design, branding, etc. but I will be shifting to accept more 1+1 coaching clients, and developing a group program as well beginning in 2016.
Can you share a bit about how you choose this line of business? What transition did you make to owning your own business?
I have been in sales for what may seem to be way too long... for over a decade. If I didn’t stay true to me, I would have failed miserably. I am not the typical sales professional. I care. That is a rare quality in sales. Caring is actually seen as a weakness according to 90% of the sales management out there. But I was always excellent no matter what it was that I sold. Some industries were way too rough and insensitive and so bottom line driven I opted to find something I truly love. So this path found me.
Do you take any special training?
I have a degree in mass communications with an emphasis in media with a minor in psychology. But having over a decade of sales experience, and a love for design and social media definitely helps. I've been coding websites since I was 12 and designing since I was first able, since about 2002... Slightly addicted to both of them.
What lessons have you learned with your business?
Helping my clients get their businesses together and their brand image across all platforms is a love but is taking too much time for me to continue as a full-time effort. I love learning new techniques, and how to work more efficiently. And the hardest lesson I've learned so far is that I CAN'T do it all. Even though I may be able to do something, it may not be worth the time. Letting go and letting someone else in to help turn my dream into reality and opening my dream up to a select few, was and still is very difficult.
Do you have any start-up advice you can share with women reading this who would like to launch their own businesses?
You can’t do it all and have a life. Unless you really want to just work part-time at a glacial rate. Let someone help. Qualified help, but still help. Getting a coach isn't admitting defeat, it's ensuring your success. Finding someone to code your website is a good idea, not a waste of money. Some things we can do, but the time it takes is not worth it when you have such limited time.
Do you have any advice on managing your small business finances?
I’m not the best at finances but I have a really simple spreadsheet showing income and expenses really simply. That would be something to get help on from a coach or professional.
How do you balance work and life owning a small business?
I set boundaries. And I make myself stop. I can feel my inspiration slipping. A huge part of my business is inspiration based. And if I’m feeling worn out and stressed, I go back to my default setting of peace. I know it sounds very corny, but it's taken me a long time to get to the point where I’m at peace and happy as a default. So I go for a walk, window shop, grab a latte, or if it's night time, I walk away. I literally write a list of things I’m trying to wrap up at that moment, and I walk away from my office and go to bed. Then I reset in the morning by taking a nice bubble bath and pampering myself a little bit, listen to music or open up "A Course in Miracles" anything to get myself started with the right mindset.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself running retreats all over the world for women to connect with their true selves, and grow together in amazing locations. Still empowering women to take control of their life and business, but also keeping themselves as the priority. I see my camp providing an escape for thousands of girls and women who are unable to afford it otherwise (see my about me page... that's my BIG why). Our children truly are our future :)
I see a shift across women entrepreneurs around the globe. Working together, and taking control of their lives and financial independence through entrepreneurship, and I’m one of the forces fighting with them.
Please share a fun fact about yourself
I’m such a random person. I can talk to a stranger like a crazy person. Especially if the topics are food, Disney world (I used to work there), sailor moon, scandal, the walking dead, or Assassins Creed. And I’m talking HOURS! Don't believe me? Just ask!
