Things are winding down, the holidays are here and the new year is fast approaching - right about now is the perfect time to reflect on how the past year went specifically around your life and financial goals.

Why? Well, looking back will help you determine how you actually did in comparison to the goals you set and it will also help you set the stage for the year ahead in terms of the things you want to accomplish. It's not about judging yourself, instead it's about reflection and taking the lessons you've learnt from the last year and applying them to your future so you can do even better.

Below are 15 questions that will help you reflect on your financial goals from the past year as well as help you establish your new goals for the upcoming year.

Questions to ask yourself about the last year

  1. If you were to describe your last year in one sentence what would it be?
  2. What were your biggest accomplishments with your money, life and career?
  3. What areas do you wish you did better with your money, life and career?
  4. Do you feel like you surrounded yourself with the right people and influences to help you accomplish your goals?
  5. What was the best thing you spent money on?
  6. What was the worst thing you spent money on?
  7. What financial goals did you set and achieve?
  8. What financial goals did you set, make progress on, but did not complete?
  9. What financial goals did you set but made no progress on?
  10. If there was one thing you could change about the past year and the way your handled working towards your goals, what would it be?

Questions to ask yourself about the upcoming year

  1. What are your main life and financial goals for the next year in order of priority? (Be specific and set timelines)
  2. What are you willing to do to ensure your accomplish your top priority goals?
  3. How do you intend to stay motivated over the next year and who are your designated accountability partners to keep you on track?
  4. What do you want to learn when it comes to your personal development and managing your money over the next year?
  5. Why will this next year be different from last year? How do you want to feel about it when you look back?

Take your time to answer these questions. Grab your journal or a piece of paper and write down your answers, thoughts and feelings. 

Not only will this exercise bring you clarity, it will also help you prepare yourself to go into this next year with the right mindset (to succeed) and a solid plan to work on your financial and life goals.
