When You Are The Breadwinner Wife: 3 Tips To Make Things Work

Updated on

In today's world, it's not uncommon for wives to be the breadwinners in their homes. Once upon a time, I was the breadwinner in my family too. However, sometimes, this can be a really difficult situation to be in as a woman especially when having the wife as the breadwinner is the opposite of the traditional marriage setting. I've put together 3 tips to help ease the tension, if any exists, if you are the breadwinner at home.

Tip #1: Don't apologize but don't be obnoxious

A lot of times when women earn more, or when we do better than our male-counterparts we sometimes feel like we need to apologize or play down our accomplishments. Instead, we should be proud of what we have been able to do without being obnoxious about it to avoid driving contempt or resentment in our partners.

At the end of the day, you are a team and whatever you do or accomplish or earn only helps to make your team better and that is the angle you want to approach it. Be proud of your accomplishment, but involve your partner in the excitement of what it means for you both and for your "team".

Tip #2: Don't be a dictator; Consider how you would want to be treated

Just because you earn more doesn't mean you should become the evil queen dictating, however, penny is spent, checking all the bank accounts and asking for a play by play of every transaction your partner made. Think of how you would want to be treated if the roles were reversed. A big part of relationships involve mutual respect and trust.  Allow your partner to make financial decisions, remember you are part of a team and it is a partnership. You need to make financial decisions together.

Tip #3: Communicate, communicate, communicate

This, in my opinion, is the most important tip when it comes to this topic. Communication is key. It's important to talk about how you feel and how your partner feels. It's important to talk about your financial goals and it's important to make financial decisions together. Keeping open lines of communication will help you avoid a ton of potential problems.

"When it comes to finances & marriage, communication is one of the most important things!"
